Vintage Pewter Hunting Scene Snuff Box

Fabulous Pewter Snuff box dating to the early 1900’s inscribed on the base as being made by James Dixon & Sons who were first founded in 1806, they used the registered trade mark of a Trumpet and a Banner as shown in the photographs.

The retailers were Fribourg & Trever a famous Pipe & Tobacco specialist who were one of Britain’s premier “Snuff Chandlers”.   They had premises in The Haymarket, London which is a street in the St. James’s area of the City of Westminster. They were suppliers to the both the Kings of Hanover and Belgium along with the Dukes of Sussex and Cambridge and the Duchess of Kent.

The lid is decorated with a hunting scene, it is good condition and has developed a good rich colour and patina, it closes well to form a good tight seal which is essential, it is a little stiff to open but will of course loosen with use.  The hinge is is good working order, this is a really delightful example and would make a great addition to any collection.

The measurements are approx 2.75″ x 1.5″ and just under 0.5″ high
